In a significant operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of WB Police successfully prevented an elaborate attempt to smuggle 90 kilograms of ganja in Bolpur, Birbhum district.
The STF, acting on precise information, intercepted two Swift Dezire four-wheelers near Kopai Bridge late on Friday evening. During the search, the authorities discovered a sophisticated smuggling mechanism, involving specially crafted cavities near the number plates and other concealed compartments within the vehicles.
The STF officials, working in collaboration with the local police, arrested four individuals, including a woman, identified as Tathagata Rai, Subrata Das, Pradeep Choudhary, and Shipra Banik, all residents of Bhakti Nagar, New Jalpaiguri, and North 24 Parganas, respectively.
The smugglers had hidden 90 kg of ganja in these covert compartments. The vehicles were equipped with a tunnel near the rear and front lights, enabling the traffickers to evade detection. Further investigation is underway to determine the origin and destination of the illicit cargo.
